Katharine Stewart-Murray, Duchess of Atholl

Katharine Stewart-Murray, Duchess of Atholl (1874–1960) was a British aristocrat and Conservative politician. She was the first woman to be elected as a member of the parliament (MP) in Scotland. During the Spanish Civil War, she declared herself an enemy of the Francoist faction and resigned from her parliamentary seat in protest at her country’s government’s policy of non-intervention. Her work was instrumental in persuading the British government to accept the evacuation of Basque refugee children.
